Godzilla vs Kong Review

March 31, 2021 by Justin Brady in Movies, Titans

MOSTLY SPOILER FREE REVIEW:

After delays due to COVID shutdowns, this movie was finally released to the public! The film was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31st, 2021. Due to the film being released on a Wednesday, I chose to watch it on HBO Max, even though I prefer to see it on the movie screen and will probably go see it in theaters soon, I didn’t want to wait and it was more convenient just watching it at home.

The movie is visually stunning as were the previous entries in the Titan’s franchise, and there are some returning characters from the previous film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. If you are new to the franchise, it’s not necessary to have watched the previous films. But I do suggest starting from the beginning to get a good perspective of the overall story, and they do a really good job of trying them all together.

  1. Kong: Skull Island

  2. Godzilla

  3. Godzilla: King of the Monsters

  4. Godzilla vs Kong

The movie starts three years after the last film, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and despite Godzilla being the savior of the humans in the last film, this new chapter shows us a Godzilla attacking humans and human cities. Has Godzilla turned to the Dark Side now? Don’t worry all will be revealed and it will make sense as the story goes along.

Despite an altercation early in the story, we’ve all seen it in the movie trailers with Kong on the ship and Godzilla attacking from the water, the two end up going on their own paths. Kong seeks the center of the earth and with ties back to Kong: Skull Island, we see where Kong and his family hail from. Godzilla seeks to right past wrongs brought on the world by the APEX company (explained in the earlier films).

Who wins? Godzilla or Kong?

Who wins? Godzilla or Kong?

Ultimately, the two Titans converge once again and these two Alpha Titans have to fight to see who is the one in charge of Earth and the humans. Neither of them is willing to budge an inch and it leads to some great fight sequences between Kong and Godzilla as they duke it out.

But there is a twist to the story that manifests itself as the movie goes on. Millie Bobby Brown’s character, Madison Russell, and friends do some investigating and uncover another man made threat to the Titans and humanity.

The action with the Titans is top notch and exciting to watch and combined with the human characters and their role in the story, it adds up to an overall fun movie to watch whether it’s at home or in the theaters.

All I can say is I feel bad for the humans who get caught in the middle of these Titan brawls!

*There is no end credit scene.
